Families & Communities:

Diocesan Mediation Services

Conflict is a natural part of life and of all human relationships, but unresolved major conflicts add to stress and to wasted energy, as well as a lack of cohesion in groups. The Reid Group offers mediation services for Catholic dioceses that are based on the following assumptions:

  • That the Paschal Mystery is both central to our faith as Catholic Christians and to this mediation process where workplace conflicts can be identified and addressed in a respectful and just manner for all concerned parties.
  • That diocesan leadership is committed to a fair and just conflict management process.
  • That all conflicts cannot be resolved but all conflicts can be managed well.
  • That an outside firm can be helpful in mediating disputes because they are not involved in the daily life of the diocese. This is especially true when the firm brings both an understanding of the Catholic Church and a professional expertise in the area of mediation.
  • That mediation is favored over arbitration or litigation because the parties themselves retain responsibility for decision-making.

How does it work?

Step 1: The Reid Group conducts diocesan-sponsored communications and conflict management workshops for staff, aimed at helping parties recognize their conflict with one another, identify key issues and work together toward a successful resolution of issues.

Step 2: If the parties cannot resolve their issues on their own, The Reid Group works with one of the parties in a coaching capacity, helping them to prepare for a session with the other party.

Step 3: The Reid Group works with the second party in a coaching capacity to help them reflect on key issues and prepare to negotiate with the other party.

Step 4: The Reid Group facilitates a mediation process to help both parties reach as much resolution of issues as possible toward a win-win outcome.

With The Reid Group mediation services, your diocese can offer its employees a private, confidential and effective means of resolving disputes.
